Treating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS): Interferon-beta

Interferon’s Are important immune agents called cytokines that are produced during infection. Cytokines travel through the bloodstream to alert cells to turn on their antiviral defenses. They are responsible for many of the symptoms people feel (fever, fatigue, muscle aches, headaches, depression, etc.) when they have a cold.

Interferon beta-1b has both antiviral and immunomodulatory effects. It is approved for use in multiple sclerosis, a disease that can have a similar fatigue presentation to chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS).

Interferon-b Drugs May Be Helpful in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Because they can bolster an underperforming immune system. Some studies suggest several immune deficiencies including reduced natural killer and T-cell functioning exist in some chronic fatigue syndrome patients. U.K. physician and researcher Dr. John Kerr is currently using gene expression results to target a subset of chronic fatigue syndrome patients who may benefit from Interferon-beta therapy.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Studies: none

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Patient Reports: none

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) Doctor's Report: Dr. John Chia reports about 50% success rates using combination IFN-y/ IFN-b therapy in patients with enteroviral infections. Costs are very high ($5,000/month - for one month treatment plan?) and relapses are not uncommon over the next year. Patients with severe muscle pain appear to receive the quickest and most long-lasting benefits.

Side Effects. Several Interferon beta drugs of different formulations (Avonex, Betaseron, Actimmune) are available. All can cause flu-like symptoms, fever, headaches, chill, fatigue, nausea, muscle pain, mood changes and more. Side effects can be serious.
